We are kicking off the shortest month of 2019 with THREE days of approved digs starting on February 1.

According to a press release found here from Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW), State shellfish managers have approved three days of digs after marine toxin tests showed the clams are safe to eat.

Be sure to check the Beach Map to ensure you are on the correct approved beach.

Upcoming digs are scheduled on the following dates, beaches and low tides:

• Feb. 1; Friday; 4:48 p.m.; 0.2 feet; Twin Harbors, Copalis
• Feb. 2; Saturday; 5:28 p.m.; 0.0 feet; Twin Harbors, Mocrocks
• Feb. 3, Sunday; 6:04 p.m.; -0.1 feet; Twin Harbors, Copalis

The digs are all in the evening, so be sure to dress warm and have fresh batteries in your headlamp, flashlight, or lantern. And be extra cautious of the ocean as it’s difficult to see large waves coming at night.

The DAILY LIMIT per person is 15 clams, no matter what condition they are in, once removed from the sand. That limit is subject to change. Always check with official sources if you have any questions. Digging prior to Noon during the Fall-Winter Season on the approved days is not allowed. All diggers age 15 or older must have an applicable fishing license to harvest razor clams on any beach. And, each digger must keep their razor clams in a separate container. Don’t mix your clams. Licenses, ranging from a three-day razor clam license to an annual combination fishing license, are available from license vendors around the state and WDFW’s licensing customer service number at (360) 902-2464.

For razor clam enthusiasts, digging at Kalaloch is a highlight of any razor clamming season due to the remote location and rare openings. Plus, Kalaloch is the most northern of the Washington State razor clamming beaches. And that means the clams may tend to be even bigger than further south. Keep a sharp eye out for the Moss Backs… those old growth razor clams that have been hiding on the beach so long vegetation begins to grow on them. And, for those that don’t know, Kalaloch means “a good place to land” in the Quinault Indian language…. It’s a great place to dig razor clams too… Enjoy!
